This side quest of Ori and the Will of the Wisps is probably the most mysterious of the game, and it opens access to a totally secret area, the Midnight Burrows. You find Tokk in the bottom left part of the world (picture1). By talking to him, the quest begins as he tries to decipher the notes of the stones behind him (picture2).

You have to imagine the stones as musical notes on a score to discover a combination to be used afterwards on the three plants in the area. To activate a plant, you have to use the “Bash” ability on it (picture3). The combination is as follows: Left, Middle, Right, Right, Left, Middle, Left. By doing this series without touching the ground, you will open the way to the Midnight Burrows (pictures4-5).

Go down and turn left to activate a Spirit Well (picture6). The concept of the zone is based on portals that keep your speed of entry at the exit. Jump to the bottom right portal (picture7) to quickly exit on the other side. If your ejection is not powerful enough, use the double jump, to gradually increase your entry speed on one side to exit higher on the other side (picture8). Note that you can also, at the end of the adventure, use the Launch ability to make your task easier.

Collect the first Keystone against the brambles (picture9), and go right. Drop down and enter the second portal at the bottom left (picture10).

On the other side, enter the left portal (picture11), and move quickly to the right (picture12).

Then use the Bash on the plants (picture13) to move to the right (picture14) until you reach a lever which, once activated (picture15), completely transforms the area.

Retrieve the Keystone on the left (picture16). Now go back and enter the portal on the left (picture17) to immediately reach a new lever (picture18). This lever has the particularity of being limited in time.

Activate it to fully open the top door and then use the Dash on the right portal. Use the Bash on the plant (picture19) to enter the portal on the top right (picture20). You arrive just above the closing door. Go through it quickly (picture21), and then continue to the right.

Enter the second portal (picture22), and gain speed with the double jump until you can reach the third Keystone (picture23). You can then break the right wall to open a shortcut to the ancestral tree in Howl’s Den (picture24).

Go back to the previous portal and gain speed to hang on the wall (picture25). Climb up and go through the area as shown in the picture below (picture26). To slow down your speed, don’t hesitate to glide with Kuro’s Feather. At the back on the left, get the fourth and last Keystone (picture27).

Go back to the beginning of the area and use the enemy’s projectiles (picture28) to reach the gate that you can open with the Keystones (picture29). Behind it, there is the quest item you’re looking for, the “Curious Tablet” (picture30).

All you have to do now is to go to Tokk (picture31), and give him the tablet to receive a “Large Spirit Light Container” (picture32). The quest is then over (picture33), but there is one last secret to discover.

Tokk tells you that the tablet is written in reverse (picture34). Here you have to understand that you have to use the previous combination again, but inverted: Left, Middle, Left, Right, Right, Middle, Left. A new door opens, allowing you to approach an ancestral tree on the right. By absorbing its light you get the “Ancestral Light” (picture35), which increases the damage you inflict by 25%.
