Here are some facts about Republic Day 2024 your children would love to hear about:
The Date and its Significance:
We all know that we celebrate Republic Day on January 26th every year.
But did you know this date has more meaning to it?
In 1930, the Indian National Congress declared “Purna Swaraj” (complete independence) on this day. Soon later, after independence in 1947, it marked the day when India’s Constitution came into effect, which established us as a sovereign republic.
The Constitution:
Did you know India’s Constitution is one of the longest in the world?
It took over two years and 11 months to finally come into effect, with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar playing a crucial role in the drafting of our constitution, and it’s beautifully handwritten in two languages, both English and Hindi.
Amazing right?
More than just a Day:
Did you know that Republic Day celebrations actually span FOUR DAYS?
Starting on January 24th with the Beating Retreat ceremony, then the main parade and cultural showcase on January 26th, and finally concluding on January 29th with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary.
Awards and Recognition:
Every year, this special day arrives when the President of India honors outstanding individuals, both from civilian and military backgrounds, for their remarkable contributions to the nation.
These prestigious awards, namely the Bharat Ratna, Padma Awards, and Ashok Chakra, are bestowed upon those who have shown exceptional service and dedication to the country.
It is a momentous occasion when deserving individuals are recognized and celebrated for their extraordinary efforts in making a positive impact on the nation.
Respecting the National Symbols:
As we celebrate Republic Day 2024, let’s emphasize the importance of respecting India’s national symbols. Teach our children about the flag, the tricolor, the emblem, and the national anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana.’ Help them understand the significance of the colors and the Ashoka Chakra.
- The tricolor flag, with saffron, white, and green colors, symbolizes courage and sacrifice, peace and truth, and faith and valor respectively.
- The 24-spoke navy blue Ashoka Chakra in the center represents law and dharma (righteousness).
- The emblem signifies the nation’s commitment to justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
- Written by Rabindranath Tagore, it is a musical tribute to India, expressing love and reverence. It celebrates diversity, acknowledging various regions and communities, and promoting unity.
By instilling this respect, we pass on the pride and love for our country to the younger generation.
Chief Guest of Honor:
Every year, we invite an important guest from another country to join our Republic Day parade. This helps make our friendships with other nations stronger and builds good relationships.
Having a special guest is like a big welcome sign, showing that we value unity and connections with the world during this important celebration.
Beyond Delhi:
Republic Day isn’t just celebrated in Delhi – its spirit echoes all around the country. In schools and communities, people come together for flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural events, and performances that show love for our nation.
Even though the big celebration is in Delhi, the whole country shares in the joy and pride of Republic Day.
Children can participate in drawing competitions, quizzes, and essay writing to learn more about the day’s significance.
Grand Parade and More:

You get to see India’s strong army with tanks, fighter jets, and soldiers marching together. And it’s not just that – there are also exciting performances from different states showing off their special traditions and colorful costumes from different states and territories.
